Kira Jane Buxton is a Seattle-based author celebrated for her unique blend of comedic fantasy and environmental themes. Raised in a peripatetic household, she spent her youth living in various locations, including Indonesia, Dubai, Singapore, Korea, and Texas. This global upbringing fostered a lifelong fascination with the natural world, which began with a job at a zoo in Indonesia at age twelve. During this time, she had the unusual experience of hand-feeding rhinos and brushing hippo tongues.

Buxton's literary career followed nearly twenty years of experience in the acting industry. Her writing has since appeared in prominent outlets such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, and McSweeney's. She gained widespread acclaim with her 2019 debut novel, Hollow Kingdom, which features a foul-mouthed domesticated crow named S.T. navigating a human apocalypse. The book was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor and the Audie Awards.

She followed her debut with the sequel Feral Creatures in 2021 and her 2025 novel Tartufo, a story set in a small Italian village centered on the discovery of a massive truffle.
